Kriya ~ Stillness

Savasana

At the end of your day take five minutes to rest your body and mind in stillness through the practice of savasana (corpse pose). Lying on your back, arms down to your sides, palms facing upward, close your eyes and release all tension and holding from your body and mind. Feel your eyes rest into your sockets, allowing your ears to fall away from your face, as your tongue softens to the lower pallet. Set your consciousness on simply being present in the moment, with ease and total contentment. After several minutes or when you feel the practice is complete, gently rise and slowly re-engage with the outer world.

Meditation ~ Stillness

Returning to Stillness

We perceive a tree as being still. Yet, when a gust of wind sends its branches swaying in all directions, its movement is unmistakable, while the tree remains rooted and still. As we look upon the silence of a lake we feel the stillness, yet life forms such as fish and weeds emerge to the surface creating movement. The lake emanates stillness and also moves readily with life and change. Movement cannot exist without stillness. The innate expression of life is through stillness and in that stillness, life moves.

Have you ever noticed the pause that occurs between your inhalation and exhalation? This pause is stillness. Breath moves rhythmically in distinct patterns around this stillness. If you observe intently, you’ll notice your breath is like the wind around the tree of your being. It may vary, and shift its pattern depending on the forces external to you or the integrity and structure of your current state of being, but your innate quality of being, is still.

The exhalation creates an outward movement while the inhalation creates an inward movement. Stillness embodies a pattern of giving and receiving. It is an outward and inward expression. As you draw air and oxygen inward it feeds and fuels your life. As you exhale you release carbon dioxide outward, which fuels and sustains the plants and life around you. One cannot sustain without the other.

We often forget what we are giving and receiving and how essential and symbiotic our simple pattern of breathing is. The pattern has become so innate within us that we literally forget what the breath represents – what it offers outward and what it draws in.

It is common to lose consciousness of this movement as it revolves around stillness. The pause between our breath is ever present. Whatever moves around (including the rhythm of our breath) is ever-changing. Stillness brings continuity to the movement and thus an inescapable connection to life within and around us. One is never isolated if one is breathing. One is never disconnected — no matter the shifts in rhythm — so long as one is breathing. Where there is movement, there is stillness. And, stillness is where peace resides.

So inhale, hold your breath, and remember what is innately yours. Direct your attention to the complete silence that is always present. Know that stillness flows perpetually. And know that you can choose to move rhythmically from that place — at any moment.

Daily Reflections

Ask yourself. . .

How can I take more time to acknowledge my connection to breath and to life?

Do I notice the stillness of being beneath my breath?

What draws me away from my connection to stillness?

Meditation ~ Tree of Life

Chakric Tree of Life

There are 3 subtle energy channels that run along the spine. These channels allow for the flow of consciousness. They are ida, pingala, and sushumna. Sushumna Nadi is the central channel and is represented by the pillar of the spine and the stillness and integrity with which the body moves around. It is the trunk of our tree of life. The ida and pingala run along the sides of sushumna, and in a sense, give life to the chakric system. The chakras are energy receptors which are connected and communicate through these major channels. Within the petals of our chakras are samaskaras (karmic seeds) or impressions/memories which trigger patterns in our lives. Continue reading →

Meditation ~ Giving

A Gift Worth Giving

Giving a gift is often a very special experience and may include ceremonial elements of lovely gift wrap and thoughtful note cards. However, there is a more sacred form of giving that requires no shopping, no fancy package, and no other monetary resources. The greatest gift you can give is to simply be who you are fully, wholly, and completely. It is this gift of creatively expressing oneself in life that endures the most rewarding outcome.

Our innate gift to the world is the ability to live life fully. This does not infer that we should abandon our responsibilities or live extravagantly beyond our means. It is instead a call to explore, develop, and share the depth and qualities of our personal potential with others. And, therefore, heed our responsibilities with greater direction and fervor.

Giving authentically of ourselves without resistance from a preconditioned mind and allowing one’s true nature to flourish without pretense or a desire to be something or someone other than who we are, is not easy. We’ve all worn masks that portray specific roles according to how we think we should behave. And, while it’s necessary to extend ourselves in unlikely areas to fulfill our duties, this isn’t denying our authentic self. We deny our authentic self when we choose to deliberately act in opposition to our values and inner wisdom. For example, when we react impulsively to our emotions we are generally reacting to a preconditioned belief, rather than carefully responding from an integral place of inner wisdom.

When we begin to value ourselves and our abilities, we develop an inner trust and knowing. Instead of seeking to be extraordinary beyond our capabilities or desiring recognition from others to validate our worth, we begin to acknowledge, accept and find creative expression of who we already are with grace. The more we support the development of our inner world, the more we naturally give to life.

Understanding how our innate abilities support our responsibilities to life reveals a tremendous gift, and it is important to honor them with integrity in the choices we make each day. As you deepen your awareness of self, your natural beauty will shine — in thought, action and interaction — with ever greater ease.

Simply be all that you are – a gift that is truly worth giving.

Daily Reflections

Ask yourself. . .

How do I give to life by being who I am?

Do my daily choices align with my values ?

What innate abilities do I have and how do they support my potential?

Reading Room ~ Giving Quotes

“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” ~ Maya Angelou

“There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life — happiness, freedom, and peace of mind — are always attained by giving them to someone else.” ~ Peyton Conway March

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” ~ Winston Churchill

“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.” ~ Anthony Robbins

Kriya ~ Giving

A Giving Vibration

Each morning take a few minutes to visualize and radiate a spirit of giving. In a seated position, close your eyes and center yourawareness at your heart. Focusing on yourbreath, energetically radiate a positive vibration outward in all directions through your exhalation. Feel the warmth growing withinyour heart as you inhale. Begin to draw images in of those you wish to direct this energy toward. Without force or attachment, continue this practice of breathing and givinguntil you feel satisfied and full.

Meditation ~ Inner Truth

The involution of truth begins with the evolution of acceptance.
To see the inner truth of Self is to accept all aspects of other. Make peace with the outside world and your inner world will flourish with peace. How we interact with life is ultimately how we interact with ourselves. Be kind to you neighbor and in doing so you learn to be kind to yourself. Life is a mirror to gaze upon and offers a process to create meaning of our inner lives, therefore, heed the opportunity – reflect beauty.

“Life is a succession of moments. To live each one is to succeed.”
~Corita Kent

Meditation ~ Freedom

Attribute of Freedom

The definition of freedom (kaivalya in sanskrit) can vary widely and has attributes that correspond to one’s personal life experience. Life experiences, and the ideas, conditions, and beliefs we hold as a result of them, can either be perceived as a pathway to freedom, or a set of obstacles to our attainment of freedom.

Our mind has a memory track that holds all of our past thoughts and actions. This memory is held in the cells of our physical body called cellular memory. Cellular memory creates a physical reaction to experience, and since it has no concept of time, it responds to what is taking place in the moment based on experiences that occurred in the past – maybe even lifetimes ago. These subconscious patterns and urges become the force of action and reaction in our daily lives. Because we feel them in our body, we think they are real, giving them more validity and power.

Freedom, like restriction, is a feeling and a state of mind. Attributes of freedom are stability, balance, clarity, and vision. Freedom unlike restriction, however, is the ability to make a choice with awareness. It is also a willingness to be accountable to the consequences of that choice – even if the consequences are restrictive. In this sense, feeling free and feeling restricted are a comparable experience; they vary only in our level of awareness, perception, and ultimate accountability. If we want to feel free, it is vitally important that we become more conscious of our choices. We must lift ourselves from the perceptions of restriction that we’ve created, and move toward decisions which give rise to attributes of freedom.

When we express and expose the true nature of our being beyond the restrictive memory of – fear, envy, isolation, and discontent – we feel a sense of freedom. This feeling can be nourished and sustained by creating new memories, new perceptions, and new attitudes that begin to shift our way of being. Just as trees shed their leaves each autumn, so too does the mind need to shed layers of thought and conditioning, to expose its truest form – pure consciousness. When one’s perception is not clouded, freedom is felt.

Everything is cyclical in life, including our thoughts and actions. If our thoughts are naturally producing conditions and memories over and over – just as the leaves of a tree continue to re-bloom – be sure they are blooms that nourish your roots. Choose freedom over restriction. In doing so, you not only transform your personal thought patterns, letting go of restriction, but you shift the patterns of those around you.

Daily Reflections

Ask yourself. . .

How do I perceive my daily choices? Do I tend to feel restricted by life, or free?

What restrictive thought patterns am I ready to shed?

How can I draw an attribute of freedom more readily into my life?

Kriya ~ Freedom

Affirming Detachment

Each morning take 3-5 minutes to sit quietly in meditation. As you relax into your breath, begin to let go of all your mental activity and thoughts. Inevitably, as your mind quiets, thoughts will begin to surface. As they emerge, repeat the mantra neti neti neti. . .which says, I’m not this thought, I’m not that thought, I’m not thought. As you repeat this mantra over and over, you begin to detach mind from thought. As your mind detaches from thought freedom is exposed.
